What to Expect

The initial session for most adult chronic conditions typically lasts 45 minutes to one hour including intake, physical exam and treatment. Follow-up treatments are generally ½ to 1 hour long.

Pediatric and acute conditions typically are covered during a 25 minute to one hour consultation.

To their first visit, new patients are encouraged to bring all current medications, supplements and over the counter items taken regularly. A review of quality, effectiveness and necessity of supplements can help improve health while saving time and money through the elimination of unneeded products.

Any recent (within one year) laboratory work is beneficial to bring so Dr. Jean can review it. This will help her better understand your health and make more informed suggestions regarding your wellness. If a patient does not have current labs, appropriate tests can be ordered by Dr. Jean and reviewed during a follow-up visit.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathic medicine blends traditional therapies with modern advances in healthcare and technology. There are different principles or philosophies that make up naturopathic medicine and guide Dr. Jean’s choice of healing therapies.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

First Do No Harm

  1. Use the least invasive substances and least intervention necessary to restore health.
  2. Avoid symptom suppression as it can interfere with the healing process.
  3. Respect the inherent life force in diagnosis and treatment.

Prevention

The ultimate goal of naturopathic medicine is prevention.
Building health rather than fighting disease is the emphasis. In order to do this, risk factors, environmental factors, and hereditary susceptibility are looked at in conjunction with laboratory testing and in-depth investigation. This holistic approach guides Dr. Jean’s choices as she works with the patient to increase wellness.

Treat the Whole Person

Every patient is regarded as unique, as someone with self-healing potential. In order to tap into this potential, one of the first questions Dr. Jean asks is, “What were the circumstances in this patient’s life that set the stage for this illness?”

Origins of illness may occur on many levels including physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. All the suggestions and treatments made by Dr. Jean take into account these different factors.

Identify and Treat the Cause

Underlying causes of disease need to be removed or treated before a person can recover completely from illness. Symptoms are the body’s attempt to heal, but are not the cause of disease. Naturopathic medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease rather than the symptoms as it looks to improve the health of the whole person.

Physician as Teacher

While Dr. Jean will do her best to treat a patient, her major role is to educate and encourage them to take responsibility for thier own health.

Ultimately it is the patient, not the doctor, who accomplishes the healing. The physician’s role is to identify and remove obstacles to health and to guide the patient’s body toward healing.

Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathic medicine is based on the principle of “like cures like.” Clinical observation indicates that it works on a subtle-yet powerful-energetic level, gently acting to strengthen the body's healing.

Physical Medicine

Dr. Layton uses Cranio Sacral Therapy, physical manipulation, exercise, prescription massage, water, heat and cold to guide your body to optimal health.

Psychological Medicine

Mental attitudes and emotional states can cause physical illness. Counseling and stress management are used to help patients heal psychologically.

Botanical Medicine

Plants can be used as powerful medicines that are compatible with the body's own chemistry. They can be gently effective with few toxic side effects.

Clinical Nutrition

Since food is the best medicine, Dr. Layton uses diet and nutritional supplementation as a first line of change when treating patients. Her experience as a professional chef gives her dietary suggestions easy-to-follow practicality. This is one of her strengths as she works with not only those who wish to improve their health through food, but also those who are transitioning into a gluten-free diet due to an intolerance. To further this educational aspect of her practice, Dr. Layton teaches classes around Whatcom County to assist people in learning about gluten-free living.

Cranio Sacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy works with the relationship between the cranium, or head, and the sacrum, the bone at the base of your spine. Although everyone is familiar with the rhythm of breath and the cardiac system, there is another lesser-known rhythm that results from the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spine. This rhythm is the focus of CranioSacral therapy.

Dr. Layton is trained to notice the subtle movement of this fluid and any areas of restrictions in the skull, spine, sacrum, joints and muscles. These restrictions lead to a decrease in nerve transmission and vital fluid flow which can result in pain, system stress and dysfunction and poor health. Using an extremely gentle and relaxing touch, Dr. Layton releases these restrictions.

CranioSacral manipulation has been a form of treatment since the early 1900’s. The range of conditions treated: headaches and ear infections to strokes, spinal injuries and nervous system disorders.

What to Expect from a CranioSacral Treatment

The initial session generally starts with a brief discussion of health concerns followed by the CranioSacral therapy. This non-invasive, healing technique is preformed with the patient fully clothed and relaxed lying on their back. It is a very gentle, hands-on therapy that is often found soothing and relaxing. Many patients report feeling of relaxation and peace of mind while some are so comfortable that they have a little nap while being treated.

Follow-up appointments are sometimes needed depending on the condition. In general, a monthly visit helps to maintain optimal health.
