Ed ensures that patients’ initial treatments are within their comfort zones, especially if this is their first experience receiving acupuncture.
Treatments typically last one hour and include a combination of both acupuncture (stimulus with small needles) and manual therapy (body work such as massage, deep tissue work, etc).
Usually treatments occur while lying down, but depending on the patient, positions may differ.
Wearing loose, comfortable clothing that can roll up to the elbows and knees is optimal, but plenty of patients fit their treatments into the work day so don’t despair if you find yourself
wearing work attire to the appointment. Gowns will be provided if needed.
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at precise points. These points are then stimulated, generating a healing response by the body. The point locations were established through generations of experience by ancient Chinese practitioners. Recent MRI research has confirmed the classic point locations.
Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient theories of the flow of Qi through distinct meridians, or energy pathways, in the body. Acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from where it is in excess. In this way, acupuncture regulates and restores the harmonious energetic balance of the body. In Chinese there is a saying, “There is no pain if there is free flow; if there is pain, there is no free flow.”
In addition to needling, manual therapy techniques such as focused massage can be used to restore health to the body.
The patient may feel some tingling or electric sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected meridian, or energy pathway. Ed is very willing to work with patients to ensure a comfortable as well as beneficial treatment. If you feel uncomfortable at all, please do not hesitate to voice your concerns.
The only needles I EVER use are sterilized, single use, disposable needles.
